Our Safety Culture

Safety is at the heart of everything we do at El Paso. We are committed to protecting the safety of our employees, contractors, customers, and the neighbors in the communities where we operate. We all share in that commitment. Responses to the 2008 all-employee survey indicate that on the issue of safety, Team El Paso is focused and empowered. Ninety-eight percent of employees who participated in the survey felt encouraged to take action to ensure safe working conditions, and 96 percent believe that management clearly communicates safety expectations. Overall, 92 percent of employees surveyed gave the company high marks for safety, exceeding the industry norm by 15 percentage points2.

In 2008, the Pipeline Group recorded its best-ever performance in total recordable and days away incident safety rates. The E&P Company did not meet its own internal goals for employee and contractor safety performance, and the leadership of the E&P Company is committed to forging a path of success and improved EH&S performance in 2009, built on the foundation of leadership support and visibility, training, and communication established in 2008.

Whether in the workplace or at home, our employees are equipped with the tools and training they need to finish each day injury- and incident-free.

The Pipeline Group and E&P business units maintain intranet sites that track individual mandatory training requirements, record training completed by employees, and provide updates on regulatory information and issue-oriented training programs. The Board Committee for Health, Safety and Environmental provides oversight of El Paso’s policies, standards, accountabilities, and programs relative to health, safety and environmental-related matters. More information on the Board HSE Committee’s role is available in the Investor Relations section of our Web site.

Preventable Vehicle Incident Rate = (# Preventable Vehicle Incident Cases per 1,000,000 x miles driven for the company)

2In our 2007 report, our calculations for training participants were inaccurate. The totals published in this report for 2007 have been corrected.
