El Paso’s Giving Strategy

For more than 80 years, El Paso has practiced the art of stewardship in our communities. We not only conduct our business in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, we multiply our positive impact with charitable contributions and volunteer hours. In 2008, El Paso rolled out a comprehensive giving strategy that guides our contribution and volunteer activities and helps ensure that we make a meaningful impact in the community.

The base of our giving strategy is support for programs and organizations that are addressing fundamental needs in the communities where we operate. We support qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations that focus on the developmental needs of children; help seniors and the disenfranchised maintain independence and quality of life; promote literacy and the development of job skills to achieve self-sufficiency; and rebuild lives after disasters. Building on the base of support for fundamental needs, we also focus on two strategic giving areas: education and the environment.

Education Focus Area

We are committed to developing the skilled workforce required for the future by supporting district- or regionalendorsed programs that educate students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We focus our efforts in three main arenas:

  • Primary education – We not only help prepare underserved populations for college; we also support teacher development across STEM curriculum and support youth programs that promote awareness of free enterprise. Examples of primary education programs we support include KIPP (the Knowledge is Power Program), Junior Achievement, Teach for America, and area science fairs.

  • Secondary education – We support accredited four-year university and college programs that increase the pool of potential recruits for our workforce and concentrate on the much-needed STEM, accounting, and business disciplines.

  • Accredited trade schools and two-year colleges – We also seek opportunities to promote institutions that train the emerging workforce in a wide variety of technical disciplines including plant operations, controls, welding, and gas measurement.

Environmental Focus Area

Because we understand the importance of leaving a positive environmental legacy for the next generation, we are dedicated to preparing and educating today’s youth to be effective stewards of our environment and promoting responsible behaviors through enhanced access to environmental education and experiences. Our operations already reflect a strong commitment to environmental stewardship; our emphasis on the environment as part of our giving strategy provides opportunities to demonstrate that commitment in concrete and visible ways. We support organizations that align with our geographic operations, provide opportunities for employee involvement, and, ideally, have a youth education component.

The base of our giving strategy, combined with our two focus areas, supports all three elements of our vision. By finding opportunities for community involvement on a grassroots level, we also engage our employees in making El Paso the place to work. Supporting these areas helps us become the neighbor to have. By aligning our giving with our purpose, we support our vision to be the company to own.

We put our strategy into action through a strategic charitable contributions program, in-kind giving, and a robust volunteer outreach.
