El Paso’s Greenhouse Gas and Air
Emission Inventory
California Climate Action Registry
El Paso was the first natural gas company to join the California Climate Action Registry (CCAR), a distinguished group of organizations demonstrating leadership by voluntarily taking action on climate change. As a member, El Paso has continued to support CCAR’s tracking and certification process for our greenhouse gas emissions11. In 2008, we increased our commitment to carbon accounting by voluntarily enhancing our reporting to account for all applicable greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, making us the first natural gas company to obtain a complete CCAR-approved GHG emissions inventory.

In addition to the Board HSE committee, El Paso has an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) executive team that provides oversight of climate related issues. This team is made up of seven members of El Paso’s senior management, including Chairman, President, and CEO Doug Foshee.
Also at the executive level, the vice president of corporate development creates climate-related policies, strategy, and analysis for El Paso Corporation.
El Paso’s Pipeline Group and E&P Company have senior leadership and steering committees that direct GHG teams established within the business units.
Since natural gas is the primary commodity that we produce and transport, strategies for minimizing loss of natural gas (which is primarily composed of methane) are integrated into our business practices. Despite the lack of mandatory measures or targets establishing GHG emission reductions, El Paso has several initiatives to minimize fugitive and vented emissions and improve efficiency of our operations.
11El Paso’s GHG inventory includes Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous oxide (N2O), Pentafluoroethane (HFC-125), Tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a), and Difluoromethane (HFC-32).
